You can find information about part-time jobs on the notice board in the Student Office. There are a variety of jobs available, ranging from a full day to a few hours. However, by the time you become a senior student and decide which laboratory you will be assigned to, you will have to balance your studies with lectures, practical work and laboratory seminars.
There are 24-hour convenience stores around the campus, and within Towada there are several supermarkets and home improvement stores of all sizes, offering the same range of food, daily necessities and electrical goods as in urban areas. There is also a large shopping mall about 20 minutes away by bus, with a cinema, restaurants and other facilities.
There are no dormitories in the Faculty, but there are many private flats around the campus (within a few minutes walk). The rent for a two-room apartment with kitchen, bathroom and toilet costs between 30,000 and 40,000 yen, which is much more economical than in the city. There are also more flats that allow pets than in the cities. There is a need for engineers who take a bigger picture view, who think in terms of environmental conservation and ecological considerations, and who have the technical skills to do so.
The Towada Campus holds an Open Campus in conjunction with the university festival "Momiji Matsuri" in early October. You can see the campus in person, and since we are having a university festival, you can get a good idea of the fun atmosphere on campus. The University is based on the Kitasato Institute, which was founded by Dr. Shibasaburo Kitasato, who contributed greatly to the development of modern medicine in Japan. Dr Kitasato, who studied under Koch in Germany from 1881, astonished the world medical community at that time with his discovery of a pure culture method for the tetanus bacillus and its antitoxin. After returning to Japan, he established Japan's first private laboratory for infectious diseases and a hospital specialising in tuberculosis. This facility is used for practical training in the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences. Experiments and practical training in water environment, ecological management, environmental informatics and thesis research are carried out here.
