In Japan, the number of companion animals, especially dogs and cats, is now 20 million, and more than 60% of dogs are kept indoors. As dogs and cats age, there is an increasing demand for advanced medical treatment for a variety of illnesses, just as there is for humans. In addition, the recent outbreaks of avian influenza and other emerging infectious diseases have made it increasingly important for veterinary medicine to play a role in food safety. In response to these significant changes in the environment surrounding veterinary medicine, there is a strong need to enhance the education system and build an international network in the veterinary clinical field. With the aim of improving the veterinary education system and environment, the Department of Veterinary Medicine has sought international exchange with veterinary colleges in the United States, where veterinary medical treatment systems are particularly fragmented and specialized. In 1995, we concluded academic exchange agreements with Indiana State Purdue University, the University of Tennessee, and the University of Georgia.
Since then, we have sent around eight fifth-year students to each university's veterinary school for veterinary training during the summer holidays each year. One member of the teaching staff accompanies the students to each university to help them navigate and to get to know the teaching staff at the other school. The training period lasts two weeks and the students, either one or two in number, work under the guidance of their own medical specialists in departments such as dermatology, ophthalmology, cardiology and oncology. In addition, one teacher from each university is invited every year to give lectures, talks and seminars. In addition, students from partner universities who wish to undertake veterinary training at the Faculty visit the Towada Campus. To date, more than 500 students have participated in this program, and have left with an international outlook and a desire to play an active role in society. In this way, the Department of Veterinary Medicine and its students and faculty are actively engaged in international exchange activities with veterinary colleges in the United States. The exchange with the University of Georgia will end in March 2020, and the number of universities has been reduced from three to two.
In 1989, Kitasato University School of Veterinary Medicine signed an academic exchange agreement with Changchun University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine in China (now the School of Veterinary Medicine, Jilin University), and began international exchange by inviting and sending teachers and researchers to each other's institutions. 10 years later, in 1999, when the agreement was renewed, a new avenue for sending students to each other's institutions was opened. Since 2002, 15 to 20 fifth-year veterinary students have been sent to China for 10 days of training in Chinese veterinary medicine. The content of the training is mainly Chinese veterinary medicine, including needle anaesthesia and Chinese herbal medicine, and students who wish to practise veterinary medicine incorporating this in the future take part. Since 2016, seven to eleven students from the College of Veterinary Medicine of Jilin University and one accompanying teacher have visited the Faculty for a week each year, mainly for clinical training in veterinary clinics. In 2004, Jilin University and Changchun University of Agriculture and Forestry were merged to become one of the largest universities in China. 2019 marks the 30th anniversary of the exchange between Kitasato University and Jilin University, and we held commemorative ceremonies at both our universities. During this time, about 100 faculty members and 151 students have been exchanged. It is hoped that the international exchange of students and faculty members between the two universities will become more and more active in the future.
尚、2019年11月に髙井学部長、上野学科長、岡野専攻主任、折野国際交流委員長および胡アジア小委員会委員長の5名が吉林大学に30周年記念式典に赴きましたが、他に吉林農業大学（長春）、西南大学（重慶）、華中農業大学（武漢）に訪問致しました。現在はこれらの大学とも大学間協定を締結し、吉林大学と同様に更なる交流を深めたいと願っております。
マハナコン工科大獣医学部は、タイの首都バンコクの郊外に位置するノンチョーク地区にあり、周囲は十和田キャンパスと同様に自然豊かな環境にあります。マハンコン工科大獣医学部との学術交流協定は2012年11月に締結され、2017年10月に更新されています。2015年からは、両校の学生交換プログラムが本格的になり、それぞれの長期休暇を利用して研修を実施しています。北里大学からはこれまでに、2016年から2019年まで4回、学生が研修でマハナコン工科大学を訪れています。
コンパニオンアニマルや産業動物のみならず、日本では経験することのできない象をはじめとした野生動物・エキゾチックアニマルの診療を体験する機会があり、特徴のあるプログラムで研修が行われています。一方、マハナコン工科大からの学生に対しては、附属動物病院の小動物診療センターや大動物診療センターでの診療研修、さらには各研究室でのラボワークの研修を実施しています。研修には互いに教員が同行し、教員間の交流を深めています。
日本では経験することができない疾患との遭遇など獣医学的な研修はもちろんのこと、文化や食べ物の違いなど、広い視野で多様性があることを体験し、自らの将来に役立てることを願うと同時に、今後、教員同士の教育・研究領域でも交流が盛んになり、互いの発展に結びつくことが期待されます。
本大学では米国3大学（パーデュー大学、テネシー大学、ジョージア大学）との国際交流が1995年に始まり、歴史のある交流が継続されておりましたが、2020年にジョージア大学との交流が中止となりました。この継続の打ち切りにより本学科の学生（5年次）の夏季研修生の希望者は多いのですが受入人数が減少せざるを得ないなくなりました。新型コロナの流行により、夏季研修も中止を余儀無くされておりましたが、2022年には3年振りにパーデュー大学の夏季研修が行われました。この間に夏季研修は受験生が本学科を選択する理由の一つで、野生動物や語学の習得に対して関心が高いことから英語圏の大学を探しておりました。この度、獣医解剖学研究室吉岡一機教授の留学先であったクィーンズランド大学と関係を持つオーストラリア日本野生動物保護教育財団（AJWCEF、水野哲男理事長）で行われる野生動物臨床研修への学生の参加が認められました。今後は双方にとって教育および研究面において有益なものへと発展することを願っております。夏季研修ではカランビン・ワイルドライフ自然保護区（野生動物病院）での野生動物保護活動を通して臨床研修が行われます。研修プログラムを通して野生動物保護活動を通じ日本とオーストラリアとの交流が高まり、互いに理解と尊重の気持ちを持ち、両国の友好関係が深まる一助となることも期待しております。
