Students train to become professionals with the practical skills required in today’s world, acquiring knowledge and skills in veterinary medicine through education and research across 20 laboratories in three departments. During their first three years, students learn about the structure and function of the animal body and study diseases caused by pathogenic microorganisms. In years four through six, students learn about medicine, practical diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases, as well as advanced veterinary medicine and food safety. Upon completing the six-year program, students are then eligible to take the Japanese national veterinary examination.
Every year, as part of our summer exchange program, more than 15 fifth-year students spend two weeks in clinical practice with current students at two US universities (Purdue University and the University of Tennessee). These programs are also approved for earning credits for off-campus practical training. Each year, two faculty members of two US universities are also invited to visit Japan and stay at the Towada Campus to give special lectures and seminars. Students from the College of Veterinary Medicine at Jilin University in China and the Mahanakorn University of Technology in Thailand also come to Towada to participate in clinical training. In 2020, we also signed exchange agreements with Jilin Agricultural University, Southwest University, and Huazhong Agricultural University. We hope that students and faculty will be able to pursue a wide range of international exchange through these partnerships.
Our graduates work in various fields, making the most of their veterinary qualifications. More than half of the students become veterinary doctors, many of whom go on to open hospitals of their own. Many of our graduates also work as public servants in meat hygiene, livestock hygiene, and animal protection. Still, others work for companies and research institutions, attend graduate school, or become resident doctors at university animal hospitals. Our graduates also choose to study at veterinary schools outside Japan or participate in wildlife conservation programs as part of the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers.

There are 20 laboratories at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Labs are divided into three sections: Biological Mechanism, Preventive Health, and Clinical Research, each of which conducts specialized and practical research on a particular research theme.
